Neil Armstrong never set out to be an astronaut. But in 1962, he applied for the NASA astronaut program. When he was accepted, he became the first civilian—a person who isn’t in the military—to be an astronaut. It took years of training for him to learn how to be a pilot on a spacecraft.

Gemini 8 was Neil’s first mission to space. He and his crewmate took off for space on March 16, 1966. The mission was a success! Neil was the first pilot to attach two spacecrafts.

During this mission, the Gemini spacecraft went out of control. Neil kept calm and saved the whole crew, returning them safely to Earth.
